Published in 1910, Wolf, The Storm Leader is the fictional story of a real-life event. In 1905, U.S. Postal Service mail carrier Eli Smith accepted a bet from Northern Saloon owner and sports promoter Rex Rickard that he could not mush his team of dogs from Nome to Washington, D.C., before Congress adjourned in May 1907.

Leading the team on this dangerous and epic journey is Wolf, a pure-blooded wolf that Smith rescued as a pup from a man who treated him badly.

The story that unfolds on these pages is told from the wolf’s point of view. It takes the reader from Wolf’s beginnings in a cozy den with his brothers to his trip across Alaska’s rugged wilderness to the front steps of the White House, where President Theodore Roosevelt himself pets Wolf’s head.
